Manual Therapy Workshop

Can you confidently diagnose a thoracic segmental restriction?
Can you make sense of rib restrictions?

This workshop will consist of a review of manual thoracic and rib diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, including articulation, manual energy technique, and various high velocity thrust techniques. The content will be very similar to the current and proposed content of the MSME 701 and 709 campus courses. However, a significant amount of new material will be presented that will be different to what you may have learned during the NZAMSM or DipMSM courses.

There will be sufficient theory presented to clarify manual technique, but the workshop will be predominantly hands-on, concentrating on good posture and technique. Suitable light clothing should be worn.

Programme:

  • Presentation on thoracic and rib anatomy & biomechanics, and approach to examination.
  • Hands-on review of thoracic and rib screening techniques, and gross and segmental mobility
  • Hands-on review of therapeutic technique including, but not exclusively, articulation, muscle energy technique, and HVT manipulation
  • Novel techniques for thoracic and rib mobilisation
  • Discussion and demonstration of alternative techniques used by workshop participants. Participant feedback to guide the MSME 701 and 709 course content.
  • Periosteal tender points

Members are invited to submit a case or audit for presentation at the upcoming Winter Retreat.

Please submit the following no later than Friday 9 June 2023, so your presentation day and time may be confirmed.

  • Title of presentation
  • Short Abstract: 50-100 words
  • PPT: 3 slides only, 16:9 ratio. Please find a template that you may choose to use here. Template options that you may choose to use, have been added.
